Year 1 Lime

On Monday (4th July) we will be going on a local visit to Manor park to support our learning in both English and science. Please ensure your child is wearing sun cream, brings a hat and a water bottle to school in a small, easy to carry rucksack. Children are welcome to wear trainers to school too. We will be back in school for lunch time as normal.

Well done to all the children who auditioned this afternoon!

Our West Mallings Got Talent auditions will be taking place on Tuesday afternoon (14th June).  Please ensure that children come to school with everything they need for their audition.  Thank you.

We looked at the work of a Brazilian artist called Beatriz Milhazes then had a go in pairs at creating our own composition using different sized circles. Here are our brilliant abstract compositions!

In RE, we are learning about the Jewish faith. We have been looking at the story of Hanukkah and had a go at sequencing the story.

We hope you had a nice half term and enjoyed the Jubilee celebrations.  We can't believe this is our last term together!

PE this term will continue to be on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Don't forget to bring in your reading books every Friday.  Now that the weather is getting warmer, please make sure you bring a water bottle to school every day.

We had great fun performing in our Platinum Jubilee Celebrations

Jubilee Lunch!

Wow! What great home learning! Some children have created a musical instrument or a space craft which they have enjoyed sharing with the rest of the class.

Look at our brilliant ogres that we have created out of clay!

We used the iPads to experiment with a range of virtual instruments and explored different effects.

We had a go at creating a ‘Conscience Alley’. This was linked to our power of reading book ‘Ossiri and the Bala Mengro’. We thought about the arguments for and against the Father letting Ossiri play a musical instrument.

Our trip to Maidstone Museum!
We went on a train to the museum and enjoyed an exciting workshop on ‘A night at the Museum.’  We used our imaginations to create our own story, act it out and recorded it in different parts of the museum.  We spent time looking at lots of exhibits in the museum.  Our favourites were the Mummy, the roaring dinosaurs and digging for fossils.
We all had a great day especially as it was the first time that some of us had been on a train!

We enjoyed our Easter hunt looking for different pictures around school. We loved our chocolate lollies that we received at the end!

We were very lucky to have Oak Class read us their bedtime stories they had written for World Book Day.  We could see how much time and hard work they had put into writing and illustrating their books and loved listening to them.

Today we took part in a drama workshop called Jungle Explorer by Perform4all.

Welcome Back to Term 3!

Use these games to practise your phonic skills.

Well done Lime class! You have all worked so hard this term and are making good progress with your learning.
Thank you so much for all your generous Christmas gifts. We would like to wish you all a very happy Christmas with your loved ones. Stay safe and we look forward to seeing you in the new year!

Just to let you know that our PE days will still be on Monday and Thursday next term so can children please come to school in their PE kits on these days. Thank you.

Look at some of the brilliant Nativity scenes we created for our home learning!

We had a great time this morning at the PTA Christmas Fayre. We had a go at lots of different stalls and were all happy with our prizes!

Christmas Dinner!

Tomorrow (Wednesday 15th) is our school Christmas dinner.  Children can come to school wearing a Christmas jumper along with normal school uniform.
On Thursday 16th, the children who are in Hever castle team can wear their Christmas jumper to school again as they were the winning castle team for Terms 1 and 2.  Well done Hever!

The Big Little Nativity

Our friends for the Beast.

We designed a friend for the Beast and used clay to create them.  We looked closely at our designs and used straws, beads, matchsticks and feathers to give our creations eyes, wings, legs and arms.

Jellyfish Poems.

We were inspired by Michael Rosen to create our own group poems about jellyfish.  We watched a video of jellyfish moving in the ocean and thought about words to describe what they looked like, how they moved and what they reminded us of.  Take a look at us performing our fantastic poems!

We enjoyed our walk around West Malling looking at the different types of shops we have in our local area. We made a tally of the shops we saw and added any extra ones we spotted too. We found out that West Malling has lots of restaurants, pubs and hairdressers/barbers! Our favourite shop was ‘The Chocolate Umbrella!’

Wednesday 17th November

We are going on a short walk around West Malling as part of our Geography learning. We will be identifying human and physical features. Photos to follow...

We created our own ‘Beast’ puppets to help us retell his journey.

This term in Science, we have been learning about materials. We have found out about the different types of materials and words to describe their properties. We carried out an experiment to find the best material to make an umbrella for Ted. We found that foil and a plastic bag were the most waterproof materials and that paper and cloth were the least waterproof.

We used oil pastels to create our own firework pictures. We thought about the colours and shapes we had seen.

We used pumpkin seeds to create a collage of an Autumn tree.

We have enjoyed starting our new Power of Reading book ‘The Lonely Beast.’ We explored a picture from the story and had a go at creating a ‘freeze frame’ of the people and the Beast in the scene.

Take a look at some of the things we got up to during our first term in Year 1.

This term our topic is Toys!

It would support our lesson if each child could bring in one of their favourite toys to school tomorrow (Tuesday 12th October). Please do not bring in anything valuable or too big. Something like a teddy, small Lego figure, ball or pop-it would be perfect. They will stay in their bags on their pegs until the lesson and will be sent home at the end of the day.

Thank you for your continued support.

Well done to all of Lime Class for their lovely singing during our harvest festival this morning.

It’s harvest time!

Between Monday 11th October and Friday 15th October we will be taking part in the 2021 Mini London Marathon. We will be running, jogging and walking 2.6 miles through the week. Children should therefore wear their PE kit to school every day of that week.

On Friday 15th October, to mark the end of the challenge, children have the option to dress up for the day as their sporting role model. They are welcome to dress up as any sporting star from tennis to gymnastics to swimming or anything in between.

As part of this challenge, we will be raising money for local charity the Heart of Kent Hospice to support our school community’s contribution to ‘Elmer’s Big Heart of Kent Parade.’ Each child should therefore gather sponsorships to take part in the event and donations can be made via our school ‘Virgin Money Giving’ page on the following link. https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/WestMallingMiniMarathon

We hope that this will be a fun, inclusive event where children of all ages and abilities can raise money for a fantastic local cause, whilst taking part in a whole school event.

Charlotte Purdue | Virgin Money Giving Mini London Marathon In Schools 2021

International Great Britain athlete, Charlotte Purdue, discusses her love for running, how she got into the sport and the Virgin Money Giving London Marathon...

The children have had a great few days in Lime class and have all settled well into Year 1.  We are looking forward to a fantastic year together.
Please take a look at our class newsletter for Term 1 below.  A paper copy has also been sent home with the children.  It has lots of important information on it as well as what we will be learning about this term.

Reminders:

Reading books will be changed every Friday.  We are very excited to begin our brand new reading book scheme this week.  There will be more information being sent via parent mail later this week.  It is important that these books are returned to school each week with their Reading Record Book and School Bag (plastic wallet) to keep them safe.

Home Learning will be set this week and is to be completed throughout the term.  It is due on Monday 18th October.

PE will be on Mondays (outdoors) and Thursdays (indoors).  Children need to come to school in their PE kits.  Earrings need to be taken out or covered at home please.

Please ensure any clothing and belongings brought into school are clearly labelled including water bottles, lunch boxes, book bags, PE kits, school uniform and coats.

Please ensure your child brings a filled water bottle into school everyday.

Please remember to contact us on the Lime Class email limeteacher@west-malling.Kent.sch.uk if you have any questions or for any information you need to give to us.

Thank you for your continued support.
