Willow class have written list poems that convey the image of the crew members journey through the Weddell Sea. 

We are so pleased with the postcards that Willow Class wrote that we just had to share them.  Mrs McConnel has created a beautiful display in the corridor for everyone to enjoy.

Monday 29th March

In this lesson, you will begin by revising some spelling rules. Then you will practise identifying main and subordinate clauses. Next you will explore what a preposition is and apply your knowledge through a range of questions.

Friday 26th March

Think about leaving home for a long time – what would you miss and who would you leave behind, how would this make you feel? 

How would the person left behind feel?

Imagine you are saying goodbye to a member of the crew.

Use your notes from yesterday to write a postcard to a crew member wishing them luck on their journey.

Wishing them good luck with the expedition

How proud you are that they are embarking on such a dangerous journey

Hoping that they will return safely

Create the front picture of a postcard.  I have uploaded a picture of the Endurance and flowers that you might want to include on your postcard.  The blue flowers are called forget-me-nots and the other is a clover, which is meant to be lucky.

Monday 22nd March

Activity 1

Last week you were asked to work with a partner to write a personal statement for a crew member applying to join Shackleton's expedition.  I have uploaded pictures of the statements you wrote.  Please have a look at everyone's work and then edit your work.  You are allowed to magpie ideas!

Activity 2

Once you have written your personal statement, please research the skills your crew member would have needed to be able to do their job.  Once you have a list of skills, research the crew members career to see if you can find any examples of where they would have demonstrated these skills.

Activity 3

Research any qualifications that your crew member may have had and when they were born.

Activity 4

Now you have all the information you need to write a CV for your crew member.  Before you start, please have a look at the example, that we shared in our zoom meeting today. 

Week beginning Monday 8th March

We have started to create our English working wall, displaying our notes about Shackleton and some of the wonderful front covers that Willow Class created during home learning.  Next week we will begin interviewing potential crew members for the expedition. 

Our book this term is:  Shackleton's Journey

William Grill weaves a detailed visual narrative of Shackleton's epic journey to Antarctica in this beautifully illustrated book.

Grill's skilful use of coloured pencils and vibrant hues effortlessly evokes the adventure and excitement that surrounded the expedition.

Willow class will love examining the diagrams of the peculiar provisions and the individual drawings of each sled dog and packhorse.  This book takes the academic, and historical information behind the expedition and reinterprets it for a young audience.

Willow Class will learn:

• To appreciate why stories are memorable and characters are exciting.
•  To consider how particular situations make individuals behave as they do.
• To explore dilemmas, empathising with characters.
•  To learn about the differences between information and fiction texts.
•  To produce a range of writing to respond to text through role play and dramatisation.
