Oak Class

Curriculum Newsletter: Term Six 2022-23

Dear Parents and Carers,

We hope you all had a restful break and your children are looking forward to the term ahead. Please do not hesitate to speak to us or email on oakteacher@west-malling.kent.sch.uk should you have any questions or queries.

We understand that as we near the end of the year some children can become worried about the changes as they move into Year 5. Please do be reassured that we will be doing lots of work and having frequent discussions to support children in this. We aim to limit changes as much as possible to enable a smooth start to year 5 so please do reassure your children that we will make sure they are supported and that they should always ask if they are worried about anything at all.

Homework

Reading – Children should read EVERY day. Everyone will have a book in their tray which they are reading at school, they are welcome to also take this home to read.

Maths – Mathletics and times table practise will form the maths homework, it is expected that both are done at least once a week. By the end of this academic year the children are expected to know their tables up to 12 x 12. The order in which we learn the X tables is: 2x, 5x, 10x then 3x, 4x, 8x then 6x, 7x, 9x, 11x, 12x. This knowledge will be vital for learning in Year 5.

Spellings – Children will have spellings to practise each week, linked to learning in class. Please make sure that children practise spelling them correctly in a sentence.

Weekly homework – We hope that they are fun and interesting activities that will develop them as learners. It will be given out on a Friday and is due in on a Wednesday. There will be a different activity for each week and castle points will be awarded generously.

Useful Reminders

Please ensure everything is clearly named including PE hoodies, lunch boxes and especially JUMPERS. Nothing beats writing a name with a permeant marker as it can’t fall off and takes a while to wash off. Please remind your child that their belongings should stay either ON their peg or by their desk, this way nothing should get lost.

Sunny Days

Please essure your child comes to school ready to spend some time outdoors, Please bring a hat and wearing sun cream to school when needed.

Break time

Please remember to bring a piece of fruit or vegetable to have at break time, this gives a much needed energy boost.

PE

PE will be on Mondays and Fridays, both outside. Children should come to school in PE kits, with earrings removed and long hair tied back.

Thank you all for the beautiful flowers, teddy and generous voucher! So very kind of you thank you! I hope you all have a great half term and I will see you after that to help your new teacher settle in.

We will be completing the Year 4 Multiplication Check on the first week after half term.

It would be beneficial for your child to do some extra times table practice over the half term so that they are ready.

Some easy ways to do this include:

  • Asking questions such as “What’s 7 x 8?”
  • Reciting times tables (4 times 1 is 4, 4 times 2 is 8, etc)
  • Write up tricky ones and stick on the fridge (such as 6 x 8 = 48, 7 x 8 = 54)
  • Using apps and games (TTRS)
  • Singing times tables songs (lots can be found online)

There is also a practice test on the school website which will tell you their score and show where mistakes were made. This will help you to know which ones to practice first. We teach the times tables in the following order: 10, 2, 5, 3, 4, 8, 6, 7, 9, 11, 12.

This is absolutely nothing to worry about, the results are just for the school to know which children need some extra help with their times tables. There is no pass or fail mark and test will take no longer than 5 minutes.

Non Newtonian Fluids! They change behaviour! When force is applied they act like a solid then when a force isn’t applied they heave like a liquid.

Well done Oak Class for you fantastic class assembly!

In DT we have been making book covers, learning to sow a fastening.

In DT we have been making biscuits! YUM!

We started with a basic recipe and made adaptions to improve it.

We have been learning about the digestive system. We have learnt about the function of the different organs that we use. We even made our own stomachs as that we could see what happens.

Please explore this website and game to revisit and reinforce what we have learnt.

In English, we have been creating musical instruments just like Ossiri. We have taken inspiration from the sounds around us, as did Ossiri.

In science we have been learning about the 3 main types of teeth we have: incisors, canines and molars. We learnt about there different uses and preformed a simple test to see which teeth we use for different foods.

Enrichment week

During the afternoons this week we will be taking part in a range of exciting activities to extend learning and give new opportunities.

On Friday, 23rd September the children will be taking part in Forest School activities. Please send them into school dressed in clothes that you don't mind them getting dirty! The clothing should include long sleeves and (long) trousers and a pair of old shoes or wellington boots. They should also bring in a pair of trainers or school shoes to change into once their activities have finished.
